Now, that is a great question, but we can only do it partial justice here. To get a better idea of the available different types of hardwood, you have to come by our showroom, because at Cherokee Floor Covering, our sales staff would rather show you than tell you about the various kinds of hardwood that you might choose from. In short, though, when talking about different kinds, we can put them into three categories: material, construction, and size.
Material
When it comes to the materials from which hardwood floors are made, the list is almost endless. Oak is one of the most common materials, though maple is also a classic. Nevertheless, you might also choose from a species of hickory, walnut, or birch. Or, if you want something a little more exotic, there are products made from Acacia wood as well. Each of these woods has a grain pattern and a base color that is unique to the species in question.
Construction
There are two basic ways in which hardwood flooring is constructed. The traditional fashion is to plane the boards down and then to route tongues and grooves into the boards to allow them to fasten together tightly. This is commonly referred to as a “solid hardwood” floor. Your other option is that of engineered hardwood. In this manner of construction, layers of hardwood are attached to a plywood backing. The plywood backing allows for greater stability when it comes to areas where moisture is present and they are most commonly chosen as a floor to install over the concrete slab on the lower level of your home. Solid hardwood tends to swell and warp with moisture; engineered flooring does not.
Size
Hardwood boards are cut to different widths to create different looks. Some of the planks are cut as narrow as two-and-a-quarter inches in thickness and some are as wide as eight inches. Some floors are designed to mix up widths, which can create a pattern that is very appealing to the eye. While we are talking about size, there are also different thicknesses to hardwood flooring. Some of the products are as thin as three-eighths of an inch; others are thicker and can be as much as nine-sixteenths of an inch in thickness. The general rule of thumb is that the thicker the plank, the more times you can sand and refinish it.
