Helping you choose: site finished or prefinished hardwood flooring

Hardwood floors have an allure that can't be denied. They add warmth, charm, and elegance to any space!

There are a lot of things to consider when selecting hardwood flooring. One of your biggest decisions is having the planks site or prefinished.

Benefits of site finishing

Here, the planks are delivered raw. They are unsanded, unstained, and unsealed, and you have a flooring contractor stain and seal them.

This gives you more flexibility in choosing color, shade, and sheen. You'll have more customization possibilities and colors from which to choose.

When it's site-finished, the hardwood flooring is usually sanded again afterward. That makes the floors ultimately smoother. And while you're at it, decide on the type of finish, whether it's penetrating oil or polyurethane-based.

Prefinished: you know right away what you're getting

Your planks will be delivered completely. There's no guesswork, and you know just what you're getting.

That means you can start the coordination process right away.

A prefinished floor is also more resistant to scratches, stains, and fading. It's done in a controlled setting like the factory so that a super-tough commercial finish can be used.

Also, consider the following:

  1. Grain pattern: Decide if you want a long, linear grain with some or many cathedrals or little undulations that add to the floor's decor.
  2. Plank width: Wide planks are trending, but narrow ones have a casual, contemporary look.
  3. Type of hardwood. Ask about solid and engineered hardwood floors.
