Does hardwood flooring need to be acclimated?

Yes, both solid and engineered versions of hardwood need to be acclimated. Wood has a lot of pores, and if it absorbs, the moisture can make it change shape, resulting in cupping or crowning; that can result in permanent damage or replacement of some floorboards. What is acclimation?

This is a process whereby opened boxes are left in the room where the floors are installed for three to five days. This gives the wood a chance to adjust to its new environment; keep in mind that many species are harvested from trees in different parts of the country or world.

Although engineered wood is more stable and better able to handle water, it's often installed via the floating floor technique; when a floor floats, pieces click, mat, and then hover over the subfloor without nails or glue. There is always a chance of some shape-changing that can throw a floating floor off balance. Flooring is a significant investment, and you want to protect it, so why take the chance?

What is cupping and crowning?

First, it's important to note that many installers find these two cause the most significant damage. Cupping has raised sides and a sunken middle. Crowning is when the center is higher than the sides. Both are caused when the floor expands and the boards crowd each other, while gaps are created when the air gets very dry, and the boards shrink.

Taking care of your wood floors

Whether it's solid or engineered, these floors are straightforward to maintain. Wipe spills immediately, especially when it's solid (although that's a good idea for any floor.) Sweep with a soft broom, vacuum without beater bars, and periodically use a damp mop and wood floor cleaner. They can be refinished and last for approximately 50 years.
